Root Cellar

Family farmers by trade, Chelsea and Jake Davis surprised everyone when they decided to open a retail store with zero retail experience. Self-proclaimed serial entrepreneurs, they bought Root Cellar, located in Columbia, Missouri, in 2011 with the goal of introducing more opportunities for local farmers to sell their products. Along with this goal came a desire to share the stories of their farmers; to demonstrate the true integrity and authenticity behind each farmer as they strive towards the shared goal of providing their community with quality food.

What we love about Root Cellar is their simplicity. While they may not have five brands of ketchup or potatoes on their shelves, you can rest assured that they have taken great care in selecting the products they do offer. You can also be confident that their sales do, in fact, help your local farmers continue to pursue the craft they love.

In addition to their retail storefront, Root Cellar has taken Columbia and Jefferson City by storm with their weekly local food subscription boxes. Chelsea and Jake take the guesswork out of shopping for local ingredients and make it easier for the community to eat seasonally throughout the year. They think of themselves as curators; they're able to use their experience to provide quality food without the consumer having to understand the ins and outs of the food to table process.

Subscribers have the opportunity to choose between three different boxes based on their needs: The Bounty Box, The Barnyard Box, and The Ploughman's Box. Included in your subscription is a weekly e-newsletter that aims to help subscribers discover how to prepare and serve the items that are included. You will also find recipes and other food-related tips. We love that Chelsea and Jake are providing education that helps their community get back in touch with food.

Chelsea and Jake take their motto "farmer first" very seriously.  It's not rare to see them coming alongside their farmers to help plant and harvest. Because of their experience as farmers, they understand the unique challenges that farmers face and do their best to support them. Part of coming alongside their farmers involves helping the community understand these challenges. We love that Root Cellar is bridging the gap between Columbia's farmers and consumers. Be sure to visit Root Cellar next time you're in downtown Columbia.
